Kayaking

IMU-based analysis of paddle pitch and kayak acceleration to assess propulsion efficiency.

INTRODUCTION AND MOTIVATION

The use of inertial technologies in kayaking enables detailed analysis of paddling technique and propulsion efficiency.
Key parameters such as the pitch angle of the paddle and the forward acceleration of the kayak can be measured using IMU sensors. These variables provide valuable information to understand how each stroke contributes to boat movement and performance.

DEVELOPED PROTOTYPE

An IMU-based system has been implemented to monitor paddling dynamics in real conditions, allowing continuous data acquisition during training sessions.
The system is water-resistant, ensuring reliable operation in aquatic environments without affecting performance. It captures the paddle inclination (pitch) and the acceleration along the kayak’s forward axis, enabling the analysis of stroke cycles and propulsion patterns. This approach provides objective data while remaining unobtrusive for the athlete.
